Laboratory of Midwifery Care for High-Risk Pregnancy

The aim of the course is for students to recognize the signs and symptoms of pathological conditions in pregnancy and childbirth so that, in collaboration with the obstetrician, to contribute to the early prevention and treatment of complications for the mother and the fetus. Moreover, by the end of this course, students are expected to be able to implement comprehensive midwifery nursing care and to provide psychological support to women with a high-risk pregnancy.

Students attend the Bodosakeio Hospital for the needs of the laboratory. They observe and monitor women during their prenatal and perinatal stages, both at the Department of Midwifery and at the Delivery Room and are trained to deal with such incidents in accordance with their duties.

Midwifery care of pregnant women with pre-existing pathological conditions:

  • Metabolic diseases (diabetes mellitus, thyroid gland diseases).
  • Cardiovascular disorders.
  • Respiratory problems (asthma).
  • Neurological disorders (epilepsy).
  • Substance abuse (alcohol, drugs, etc.).

Midwifery care of pregnant women with pathological conditions that occur during pregnancy:

  • Gestational hypertension (pre-eclampsia, HELLP syndrome).
  • Hyperemesis gravidarum.
  • 1st, 2nd, and 3rd trimester bleeding.
  • Uterine atony.
  • Blood coagulation disorders. Disseminated Intravascular Coagulation (DIC).
  • Acquired infections during gestation.
  • Sexually transmitted diseases (chlamydia, gonorrhea, genital herpes, syphilis, hepatitis, Group B streptococcus, fungus, trichomonas, microbial vaginitis).
  • Human Immunodeficiency Virus (HIV) and AIDS.
  • TORCH infections (toxoplasma, etc.).
  • Projection and prolapse of the umbilical cord.
  • Preterm rupture of membranes-Preterm labor.
  • Amniotic fluid embolism.
  • Uterine rupture.

Students practice:

  • In high-risk pregnancy groups in midwifery care of pregnant women with problems pertaining to the above conditions.
  • Inside the delivery room in the monitoring of patients with pathological conditions and in their preparation for emergency Caesarean section.
