Pediatric Nursing Care Laboratory

The aim of the course is for students to acquire the necessary knowledge and skills on the pathological conditions of all the systems of the child’s organism, to be able to recognize the problems of the sick child, to estimate the severity of the condition, to create the corresponding treatment plan and to apply the required pediatric nursing care.

The laboratory’s course material includes the following:

  • Organization and operation of the pediatric department and clinic.
  • Treatment of all the pathological conditions related to the threatened health of the child.

Clinical practice in the following:

  • Respiratory control
  • Check of Vital Signs
  • Oximetry
  • Blood sugar measurement
  • Thermometry
  • Oxygen administration by using nasal cannula or face mask
  • Aspiration of secretions
  • Placement of head and chest in upper position
  • Physiotherapy
  • Medication administration according to medical instructions
  • Fluid administration (intravenous and per- os)
  • Blood pressure measurement
  • Control of dermal alterations
  • Monitoring of cardiovascular function using a screen
  • Recording and check of fluid balance
  • Administration of milk, juices, and sweets in hypoglycemia
  • Insulin administration in hyperglycemia. Demonstration to parents and child of the appropriate way to administer insulin
  • Training of the child
  • Teaching of how to apply pressure to a wound or laceration
  • Placement of ice
  • Obtaining laboratory test for the factor VIII and PTT
  • Daily weighing of the child
  • Informing the parents about the child’s proper hydration
  • Careful monitoring of bleeding sites
  • Orthostatic hypotension check
  • Fluid balance check
  • Informing parents about the importance of the child’s proper nutrition (calories, proteins)
  • Observation of the texture and composition of the feces (dark color, blood)
  • Venous line placement and fluid administration
  • Laboratory monitoring of electrolytes
  • Conversation with the child. Ways to increase his/her self- esteem
  • Regular alimentation of the child. Training parents of the proper grip of the child
  • Observation and recording of nausea and vomiting
