The purpose of this course is for students to gain the necessary knowledge, so that they can practice total nursing care for premature infants and infants with complications.
Laboratory outline
- First evaluation of the infant.
- Neonatal rating. Admission criteria at the various levels of nursing in N.I.C.U.
- Neonatal care and feeding (parenteral feeding, intravenous feeding, nasogastric and stomatogastric catheter insertion).
- Hypothermia- Hyperthermia.
- Medicine administration. Administration of intramuscular and subcutaneous injections. Injectable solutions.
- Neonatal resuscitation (technique).
- Neonatal care for infants who suffer from respiratory distress (oxygen therapy), hyperbilirubinemia, hyperglycaemia-hypoglycaemia, low birth weight (underweight), intrauterine growth restriction (IUGR), infections and addictions to drugs, obstetric injuries, and related anomalies.
- Support, approach, and development of the bond between parents and their infants in N.I.C.U.
- Prevention of nosocomial infections in N.I.C.U.
- Transportation of infants.
- Counter- check of high- risk infants.
- Preparation for punctures, catheterizations, and minor interventions.
- Operation, use and maintenance of support machines.
- Resuscitation- intubation technique.
- Care of normal infants.
- Parent consultancy for neonatal care.
The practical (laboratory) part of the course will include 5 hours of weekly student practice on neonatal care application, 2 hours of which will be performed in N.I.C.U on a weekly basis.
