Fundamentals of Nursing Laboratory

The science of nursing belongs to the wider branch of health sciences and is dedicated to human and to care delivery, not only as far as illness is concerned, but also pertaining to human’s normal life.

Among the principal objectives of nursing are the promotion of wellness, the prevention of illness, the restoration of health and the facilitation of dealing with a health issue.

 

Upon completion of the present course, students are expected to:

  1. be familiar with the nursing terminology
  2. be able to recognise basic nursing issues and make nursing diagnoses
  3. be familiar with the basic principles and skills of nursing care
  4. be introduced to the basic principles of specialized nursing techniques and interventions.

The laboratory’s course material includes the following:

  • Patient’s admission to hospital, preparation of the ward, making of the bed.
  • Body mechanics, proper positioning of the patient on the bed, positioning for transfer and awakening.
  • Body hygiene.
  • Monitoring and recording vital signs.
  • Body systems’ evaluation.
  • Fundamental principles of sterilization, antiseptics, disinfection.
  • Urinary discharge.
  • Intestinal discharge.
  • Use of warm and cold patches.
  • Fundamental principles of oxygen therapy.
  • Presurgical medication.
  • Postsurgical medication.
  • Principles for medication administration.
  • Drug dissolution technique for parenteral
  • Intramuscular, subcutaneous, intradermal medication administration.
  • Venipuncture, intravenous liquid, and drug administration.
  • Blood and blood products’ transfusion.
  • Surgical trauma care.
  • Prevention and care of decubiti.
  • Nasogastric tube placement.
