The Internship of the students of the Department of Midwifery is an integral part of the study program and a necessary condition for obtaining the degree. The Internship is of great importance as an institution considering that its purpose is to acquaint students with the professional reality of the science of Midwifery and the application of theoretical knowledge in a real environment.
The Internship in the Department of Midwifery:
- is mandatory and has a total duration of six (6) months.
- is included in the undergraduate study program’s course curriculum of the Department, in the 8th semester, with course code MWPR and awards 20 ECTS.
- takes place exclusively in public or private maternity hospitals and only those students who are in their 8th semester or older, have been successfully examined in all specialty courses and at the same time in at least 2/3 of the courses required to obtain a degree, are entitled to participation
- can also be conducted in foreign institutions, as long as it becomes possible to supervise the educational process, in accordance with what is defined in the internal regulations of the program.
- is counted towards the required number of courses for obtaining the Midwife’s Degree and its grade is indicated in the student’s detailed score.
For the successful completion of the Internship, the students are obliged during the Internship program to autonomously carry out forty (40) normal births. In the absence of normal births, this number can be reduced to at least thirty (30) births under the condition that the student will participate in twenty (20) additional births.
For the coordination and supervision of the execution of the Internship program, the Department Assembly appoints at the beginning of each academic year the Educational Supervisor and a three-member internship committee, which includes the Educational Supervisor of the internship, the Head of the Department and one (1) member of the Department’s faculty.
In addition, for each practical intern, an Internship Supervisor, who may supervise more interns, is appointed by the Department Assembly.
The Educational Supervisor of the Internship:
- decides on all organizational matters,
- coordinates,
- organizes,
- supervises and
- controls the actions for undertaking the project
- organizes all the necessary actions for the financial compensation of the student interns in accordance with the procedures provided for in the program and
- supervises student interns
The students are evaluated by the three-member internship committee of the department after submitting the required supporting documents for their assessment.
